Going to the Dentist: Entering Afraid and Ending Relieved

I have a fear of dentists. I am not talking about feeling a bit uneasy. I am talking about having a paralyzing fear of anything pointy and sharp getting near my face and mouth. I was browsing dentists the other day - I was looking for affordable dental implants in London - and that feeling of fear came back to me. I anticipate pain and discomfort just thinking about the profession. So imagine my horror when, last month, I found cavities in my mouth. I had had a tooth bothering me, so I forced myself to the dentist. The verdict was clear: the tooth had to be filled. Immediately, I became queasy just thinking about the long needles that were about to be inserted into my gums. I opened my mouth, waiting for the pain, waiting for the pain, and then I heard, "All done." What? All done with what? My dentist had finished the numbing shots without me even feeling it. At this moment, my irrational fears began to disappear, and I became more relaxed as the dentist began filling my tooth. The drill was loud, but I felt no pain. Overall, I would say I had blown my fear of the dentist completely out of proportion. Getting one's teeth worked on is never a great experience, but I don't fear it anymore, and I have my wonderful dentist to thank for that.
